The Burial Ground of Ziznarex

 The Burial Ground of Ziznarex

As you press deeper into the Black Marshes, the land begins to change beneath your feet.

The soil grows hot and foul-smelling. Wide, jagged cracks rupture the damp, moss-covered ground. Sickly green fumes seep up in slow pulses, carrying with them a sharp, stinging scent like rotting copper and burned sulfur.

Watch Your Step…
The earth here is unsteady. Foot-wide fissures split the land in all directions, forming a chaotic web of crumbling stone and oozing mud. The fumes are heavier here, almost alive with malice.

As you approach the scene, the ground hisses softly beneath your boots as noxious green fumes seep from the cracked earth. With every step, the air grows thicker, more acrid. Moving quickly through this place stirs the vapors, and the deeper you breathe, the more they claw at your throat.

As you press on to get a closer look, a bitter sting creeps into your lungs. A fit of coughing seizes your chest, your eyes begin to water, and the world blurs slightly at the edges. Even the smallest sounds feel distant, muffled by the weight of the poisoned air.

As the haze thickens, the sound of curses in Goblin-tongue and the dull thunk of shovels against stone cuts through the stifling silence.

Through the mist, you come upon a clearing of cracked rock and ash-smeared dirt. At its center rests a three-stone mound, ancient and weather-worn—its surface scorched black as if by ancient fire. It looks less like a grave and more like a scar left by something that refused to be buried.

Around the mound, a flurry of motion:

  • Three Marsh Goblin Archers perch on broken stones, bows drawn.
  • A Hobgoblin Spine Cleaver, clad in crude scale armor, barks orders and sharpens a blood-rusted blade.
  • Two Marsh Goblin Shamans chant low and frantic, drawing symbols in the muck with bones dipped in black ichor.
  • Three hulking Crocagons—reptilian brutes with mottled scales and crude satchels—labor to set sticks of alchemical explosive into the ground around the grave.

A shallow crater already splits the earth near the mound’s base; rocks blasted away in an earlier detonation. The digging has exposed something beneath the earth, something blackened and scorched... but just out of reach for the graverobbers

Lying in twisted poses, half-sunken in the marshy soil, are multiple goblin corpses—their eyes wide and lifeless, mouths frozen mid-scream. There are no obvious wounds. Whatever killed them left no mark… save for the fear frozen into their final moments.

You are approaching from the south west (bottom left) at the moment.
